Our very own U18BB hockey team is proud to share a special story about how they’ve been able to make a difference in the life of a young girl named Fulumera, halfway around the world.
As part of the teams ongoing involvement with the One4another International program, they’ve been helping Fulumera, a 13-year-old girl from Africa, who needed corrective surgery for a foot injury caused by a poor malaria injection when she was younger. For the past four years, they’ve been fundraising and supporting children like Fulumera through this amazing program, and this year, the U18BB team worked hard to raise money to cover her surgery costs.
To show Fulumera how much they care, they created a special laminated photo book with pictures of each of the U18BB players and coaches, so she could see the faces of the people who’ve been a part of her journey. Along with the book, they sent over a care package that included:
Thanks to Glenn Pascoe, the founder of One4another, who lives in Kitchener, we were able to get the care package to Fulumera during his November trip to Africa.
Our U18BB team has been involved in One4another for years, and this summer, they ran a fundraiser to raise the money needed for Fulumera’s surgery. With the extra funds, they also sent a package with food, bedding, and basic supplies to help her family during this challenging time.
It’s been incredibly rewarding to follow Fulumera’s progress throughout the season. The team get regular updates on her surgery and recovery, and knowing that their support is making a real difference in her life has been a powerful experience for our players. Helping someone across the world live a healthier, happier life is something they’ll remember forever.
The One4another program has been a reminder of how hockey can be a force for good in the world, and we’re excited to continue supporting children in need through this incredible initiative.
